Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced an ambitious plan to commission multiple infrastructure projects across the state within the next 30 days. This initiative encompasses a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, education, and road infrastructure, reflecting the administration’s commitment to comprehensive development.
A significant focus is on the healthcare sector, with the state government undertaking the rehabilitation of 200 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) under the “Project Ekwueme” initiative. This project, valued at ₦10.78 billion, aims to enhance healthcare access across all 184 wards in Abia State. Governor Otti has indicated that at least half of these centers are ready for commissioning. Additionally, the World Bank is supporting the renovation of 67 other PHCs, bringing the total to 267 facilities slated for improvement.
In the education sector, the government has initiated the construction of 20 Smart Schools, with at least two nearing completion. Furthermore, 221 existing schools are undergoing retrofitting to provide a conducive learning environment. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to revitalize the state’s educational infrastructure and improve learning outcomes.
The state’s infrastructure development is highlighted by the reconstruction of the 6.5-kilometer Port Harcourt Road in Aba, executed by Julius Berger. This project is set to be commissioned before May 29, 2025, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expected to officiate the ceremony.
Additionally, the 46.36-kilometer Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Akara–Alayi–Abiriba Highway has been completed and was recently commissioned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who lauded Governor Otti’s commitment to infrastructure development.
Other notable projects include the 1.3-kilometer Dozie Way in Umuahia, reconstructed through direct labor at a cost-effective rate, and the 11.1-kilometer Obehie-Umudobia-Owaza Road, aimed at unlocking economic potential in the region.
In a bid to boost industrialization, the Federal Government has approved the establishment of a modular refinery within the Abia Industrial and Innovation Park (AIIP) in Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government Area. This development is expected to accelerate economic growth and create employment opportunities in the state.
Governor Otti emphasized the importance of community involvement in these projects, urging residents to support and protect the infrastructure developments. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Abia State.
As the state prepares for the commissioning of these projects, the government’s multifaceted approach aims to foster sustainable development and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
