A 10-year-old Nigerian girl, Emmanuella Oziofu Mayaki from Edo state has been hired to teach coding to pupils in her age group in Southfield Primary School in the United Kingdom. She is the teacher of the afterschool coding club.

Emmanuella is an avid lover of technology who at her young age has gained significant knowledge in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, WordPress, PHP, MySQL, Graphic Design, Java and Python.

Nurturing an early interest in ICT skills

She developed an interest in coding and graphics at the age of 7 when she was in Nigeria. She was at the time a pupil of Fortune schools in Benin and pursued her interest in tech at the Mikon Institute of Information Technology.

She obtained a diploma with a speciality in multiple software programs including Advanced PowerPoint, Desktop Publishing, and Advanced Excel at the institute in 2017.

A diploma in her kitty and armed with a remarkable focus, she set and achieved the goal of becoming a professional web designer and analyst at age 9. She said, “I remember at age seven, I set a target to become a professional web designer and analyst at age nine, and I have accomplished it.”

She studied web designing at the Complete Computer Technology Centre in Benin. Since that time, she has gone on to improve her coding skills, deploy a mobile app on the Playstore, and launch her own website.

Now…

Now she will be teaching other kids the basics of web design and graphics in Southfield primary school. There are currently 9 other kids in the after school club.

“In the code club, I am teaching HTML and CSS, also graphics because if you build a website you need some graphics to add on to the page.”

She already teaches people to learn to code and design graphics through Emma’s ICT Academy, the app and website she developed.

Talking about her experience teaching the kids so far, Emmanuella said that she was nervous in the first week because that was her first time teaching a group of children.

“Although my experience was sublime because I gained experience and I also enriched my skills, my observations were that not everyone grasps how to do it on their first try and there are some that they rush through it in a breeze,” she said.

Going forward, Emmanuella plans to pursue a career in machine learning because she has experience in programming and the job is to programme a machine to perform specific tasks.

While this is different from the career path she had in mind back in January 2018 when she wanted to become a gynaecologist, growth, experience and exposure are beginning to provide some more clarity into what Emmanuaella wants to devote herself to.
